Land at Harwich railway station could be purchased by council
Tendring District Council (TDC) is to consider purchasing land at Harwich Railway Station.
Investigation works will be carried out by council officers, exploring issues such as any legal, planning or other restrictions, the value, and tenant agreements. The site sits behind Harwich Town Railway Station and was previously used by a community project.
No decision has been made to buy the site, and there are no plans for any future use of the land.
Carlo Guglielmi, TDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Resources, said the decision was about looking at all of the options.
“This piece of land is a gateway site to Historic Harwich, and whoever owns it or whatever happens with it we want to make sure it protects and enhances the character of the wonderful town,” Cllr Guglielmi said.
“For visitors arriving by rail this is their first view of Harwich so we want to safeguard it – if it is appropriate for us to do so and not others – and make sure it does not fall into ruin.”
