Guildhall to open as part of Heritage Open Days

The fact that Harwich’s Guildhall is a Grade I listed building shows that it is well worth a visit.  The UK has 374,000 listed buildings but only 9,300 of these are Grade I, the most important classification.

The Guildhall is the home of Harwich Town Council and the council is a supporter of the annual ‘Heritage Open Days’ initiative organised by the National Trust.  As such, the Guildhall will be open free of charge to visitors on the afternoon of Saturday, 7th September between 2PM and 4PM.

Mayor of Harwich, Cllr. Pam Morrison, says, “From Harwich’s 17th century mace through to the 18th century carvings on the wall of the gaol, the Guildhall is a fascinating building to visit with something special in every room.  Harwich is steeped in history and the Guildhall is at the very centre of it all.”

Harwich Town Council is aware of how important Harwich’s history and heritage is both to local residents and the tourist economy and is pleased to support the ‘Heritage Open Days’ initiative.  Guided tours of the Guildhall are available throughout the year and can be arranged by contacting the council during office hours.

“More and more people are discovering what a significant building Harwich’s Guildhall is and it is a pleasure to show people around,” continued Cllr. Morrison.  “Every year we have local visitors who tell us they have never been inside the Guildhall before and they are always amazed by what they see.  I’m sure that this will happen again this year!”
