Covid-19 Vaccination Programme
Introduction
Please find below an overview of the COVID-19 vaccination programme across north east, mid & south and west Essex as at today, Friday 08 January 2021. Please note that information can change at short notice.
The COVID-19 vaccination programme across Essex is well underway with thousands of people vaccinated already. This is part of the biggest immunisation programme in NHS history. This started in mid-December and we now have 3 hospital vaccination hubs and 20 GP vaccination services live.
With the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine now approved, the programme is ramping up with further sites planned in the coming weeks. These include new vaccination centres opening across Essex from mid-January with the potential to vaccinate between 500 and 1,500 people a day. This is thanks to local authorities and businesses in the community supporting the programme. Some community pharmacies will also be joining the programme shortly.
While we continue to respond to extreme pressures across health and social care created by a second surge in COVID-19 cases locally, the COVID-19 vaccination programme will be key in our fight against the virus, as vaccines will help curb infections. The recent announcement that the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine has been authorised by the MHRA for use in the UK is very welcome and we are seeing more COVID-19 vaccine supplies arriving. Increased supply also means that vaccination can now be expanded to frontline health and social care workers.
