Beat the street launches in Harwich

Residents in Harwich and the surrounding area can turn physical activity into points – and prizes – with a fun new initiative in the town.

Launching on Wednesday 29th September for five weeks, Beat the Street rewards people for walking, cycling – or even skipping and jumping – between various locations. Residents simply tap a special fob or card against the Beat Boxes to collect points for themselves and their team; either creating their own with friends and family or by supporting a school team. Beat Boxes are located throughout Harwich, Dovercourt, Parkeston, Ramsey and Little Oakley.

Those who top leader boards will win prizes and players also have the chance to unlock ‘lucky boxes’ too.

Cheryl Lomas, Active Essex Local Delivery Pilot Coordinator said; “Beat the Street is a great way to get active whilst having fun. Whether you’re walking to work or cycling to school, Beat the Street rewards that activity and encourages everyone to move a little more.”

In partnership with Tendring District Council (TDC), Beat the Street is funded and delivered by the Active Essex Local Delivery Pilot; a project testing ways to encourage residents to be more active and to improve health outcomes, thus reducing pressure on the NHS at the same time.

Community Voluntary Services Tendring (CVST), Intelligent Health and Sport England are also supporting this fantastic project.

Lynda McWilliams, TDC Cabinet Member for Partnerships, said she hoped lots of people would sign up and take part.

“Although you can play on your own, Beat the Street is most fun as part of a team – so why not sign up with your friends, work colleagues, or perhaps make a team with your local community group or sports club.”

Sign up and create your team at www.beatthestreet.me/harwichdovercourt or pick up your activity card from Dovercourt Library, Harwich Homestart, or Morrisons in Parkeston.
